It is easy to despair when you have made bad decisions. Perhaps you went into debt because of a bad financial choice which left you with no savings. Or you left a great job for the hopes of a greater one which ended with your new company going bankrupt. Or you cheated on your spouse and although you repented, much pain remained. Each of these decisions can cause depression and lead us to doubt God’s presence and power to overcome.
David was in this state as he wrote the Psalm we are studying this Sunday. He had made the decision to commit adultery with Bathsheba. When she became pregnant, he had her husband killed. God judged David and told him that the consequence of his sin would be for someone from his own family to revolt against him. This happened with his son, Absalom. David could have remained depressed and tried to face this situation alone. After all, why would God help him? He was the sinner and brought this on himself. Yet what we find is that God was with him.
While we sometimes make poor choices and reap the consequences of them, that does not mean that God is not our hope, strength and wisdom through it. Our Father has forgiven us for our sin and will now enable us to remain faithful as we wade through the mess our sin caused. Look to Him and faithfully rest in Him.
